If you don't know what to look for it is easy to miss Rae's Coastal Cafe, tucked within a sleepy Augusta suburb community. The menu specializes in Caribbean and Gulf Coast cuisine, and offers dishes like jerk chicken, shrimp and grits, and "Frogmore Stew," a South Carolina Low Country specialty.

On our visit we almost unanimously ordered the she-crab soup, which was creamy, delicate and made with enough sherry to exercise caution around open flames. The other popular dish at the table was the prime rib special, delivered juicy and in a Flinstone-sized portion. The quirly decor ensured that there was always something interesting to look at, including a model airplane hanging over the dining room. We look forward to our next visit to Augusta, and our next bowl of crab soup!
